In school, students apply MLA to cite their essays. In college, everything becomes more complicated, and students have to master APA style format to cite their research papers. Without having a proper, brief APA style paper format guide, one will have to read lengthy manuals and take notes to memorize the writing instructions.
What we offer is the summary of how to use APA. It will minimize your learning efforts. A student can make it simpler and faster by ordering a paper of any type written in APA from the professional college writers online.
What is APA Style Format?
Has your teacher assigned an essay to be done in APA paper format? Stop it right there and try to answer the question, “What is APA style format?” The American Psychological Association has invented this guide and a detailed guide to make students and scientists structure their works in psychology better. Other fields of study started to use the offered manual later. Currently, writers use it to organize the papers in the following fields:
- Gender studies
From this list, it becomes obvious who uses APA. Students and professionals working in these fields need APA.
APA Style Format: Basic Rules
We recommend observing the outline format APA style. It contains the major principles of formatting in APA.
- Use Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri
- The four should be 12pt
- A single-inch margin everywhere
- The work should contain heading on the top of each page
- The top must have a paper’s title (make it shorter if it exceeds 50 characters)
- The page number to pop up on the right
According to APA Formatting Guide 6th Edition, it has 4 major part. They are:
- Title Page
- Abstract & Intro
- A body of the Research
- Powerful Conclusion & References
References are sometimes called Works Cited or Bibliography in other styles (like Vancouver). The title page is the opening one. We will discuss it in details.
Explore APA Style Format Example
Students may get the point faster having an APA style example in front of the eyes. The title page should go this way:
- Add the work’s full title, your name & last name, and the institution’s title;
- Insert a page header on the left. Page’s number appears on the right;
- The title must be in the center, and it is better to make it no more than 12 words (no abbreviations and senseless words);
- Make sure the entire text is double-spaced.
- Work with a 5-level heading structure. It is important to understand how to use various levels of headings to keep the paper organized and readable. A writer should proceed through the level numerically, beginning with level 1, without missing any levels.
The initial heading shows up once the student has started writing the text. Never name the primary heading Introduction; the start of the text is meant to be an introduction, so it does not make any sense. The title is a section level, not heading. Place the work’s title at the top of the opening page, written in a recommended font and centered, and write the content after it. Apply many different levels to structure a long work like a dissertation. An average dissertation will require something around 4-5 levels.
Here are some good heading examples to give you the overall picture:
- The Way Kids Perceive Stress in Pediatric Intensive Care Units
- The Quality of Medical Services for Patients with Diabetes II
- The Impact of Revenue Level on Obesity Rates
- Home Healthcare Services: Their Efficiency and Gaps
- Methods Used to Improve Initial Testicular Cancer Detection
Observing Each Section under the Loop
We have discussed title page in-depth. It is time to explore other sections of the APA research paper - they are different from the standard essay!
Abstract. It is the shortest part of the project (excluding the title page), and it shows up after the cover page. This part has to occupy no more than 1/3 of the page, meaning 250-300 words maximum. It is a challenge! The thing is such a tiny text should summarize the basic points of the research paper without losing the main point.
Main Body (Introduction, Methodology, Results & Discussion). These elements are not obligatory: if the prompt feels to structure a research paper in another way, stick to the professor’s instructions. An introduction presents the topic. A method section contains the detailed description of the tools, equipment, and techniques used to compose a project. A Results & Discussion section refers to the interpretation of findings and related discussion.
The References Page. In MLA, the last page is titled Works Cited while some other approaches to formatting have it as Bibliography. In case of APA, use References Page to name such list. Do you need an example of the references page?
APA Format Guide: Examples of Citations & References
Before developing a References Page according to the official APA guide, it is critical to observe the way in-text citations appear in the text. They can be direct or indirect.
As for the APA style citation format, see the examples below.
Direct in-text citation, “Other experts who work with non-native speakers could benefit from a program offered by Derwing” (Munro, 2003).
Indirect in-text citation, “Munro (2003) admitted that other field professionals who worked with non-native speakers could benefit from a program proposed by Derwing.”
Let’s say; a student is using a couple of sources - the references page will look this way:
American Educational Research Association. (1989). Standards for a psychological examination of younger students based on the latest innovations in the field of mental treatment. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association.
Australia. Department of Health & Aged care. (2000). Issues with the emotional behavior of young adults: A report staying anxiety and aggression among teens, 1999. Canberra, ACT: AGPS.
The way you build references depends on the type of source you cite: approaches to citing & referencing book and videos are different!
We have covered the basic principles of APA. In case these instructions seem insufficient or cumbersome, a student might want to ease the mission by ordering a professionally written research paper online. Certified writers know how to cite in any existing academic format!
